How I turned my self-taught passion into a profession impacting millions (and the CORRECT way to use tutorials) 🔎
📸 During my photography degree, I had a realisation that changed everything— I love video. Specifically, that I was obsessed with motion graphics and animations.
(more on the story of that realisation another time?)
I spent hours hyper-fixating on simple processes and techniques in After Effects - creating the most basic animations using simple tutorials.
Here’s what I discovered on my journey that not many talk about (this was the 🔑 to my growth):
There IS a correct way to use tutorials.
My strategy for lasting progress using tutorials:
1️⃣ One Thing at a Time:
Instead of overwhelming yourself with tutorials that cover ‘5 different effects’ or a million things at once, use more focused tutorials on specific things. This approach helped me truly understand what I was learning and avoided overload. This encourages depth over breadth in the short term, but will lead to both in the long term.
2️⃣ Consistency over Cramming:
Small, consistent efforts compound over time. I set 45 minutes a day to learn something new and practice. This is far more useful time than random 5 hour sessions that will overload your brain.
3️⃣ Aim for the 1%s:
I didn’t stress about mastering Hollywood-level VFX right off the bat. Sustainable growth comes from incremental learning—like discovering a new shortcut or understanding what a button does. But we must value the importance of getting the 1%s.
4️⃣ Passion - it won't work without it:
If you’re not genuinely passionate about what you’re learning, it will be so difficult to stay committed over the years it takes to truly master something. You have to WANT it.
The biggest question I always hear is ‘but I don’t know where to start?’ - that’s a future post 😉
